Share The Good News
Many of us have been trying to point out some of the things that Dr. Holliday and his buddies are doing that are detrimental to the Iredell-Statesville School System. We know, as others have stated, that there are a lot of good things going on in the schools. I am asking everyone to take a moment and share some good news about the schools and about the students. Perhaps your child had an excellent teacher last year, maybe you know of a student who took some time to help another student, or possibly there was a school custodian who took on extra tasks that he or she was not required to do. I am sure that there are many good stories that could be shared with everyone. Please leave a comment that tells of your good school experiences.

My grandson had an absolutely wonderful teacher for his first grade year. Mrs. Ridenhour, a teacher at Third Creek Elementary, went out of her way to teach our only grandchild. She was wonderfully patient, understanding, skilled, and loving--just like the teacher you hope your child will get every year. I readily nominate her as Teacher of the Year!!
ReplyDeleteMy son's teacher was absolutely wonderful as were the custodians. Ms. McDonald was also my son's bus driver and she was always cheerful and greeted him every morning. All of the custodians went out of their way to be helpful and keep the school running well.
ReplyDeleteThe custodial staff at Sharon Elementaty do an excellent job of keeping a clean environment. The teachers at Sharon are some of the most loving, caring and motivated in the district.
ReplyDeleteI would like to leave a compliment for all of the EC bus drivers and teaching assistants who transport our special babies to and from school everyday. It is just too bad that some of the staff must start the routes at 4:30 or 5:00 AM. What is even sadder is that some of the EC students board the buses at 5:30 AM.
ReplyDeleteDuring my tenure at ISS, I have had many teaching assistants. I was blessed to have caring, hardworking people. I am holding my breath that these ladies and gentlemen still have a job come August. The TA's are the backbones of the classrooms, especially the elementary and EC assistants.
ReplyDeletePlease reference the above blog regarding teacher assistants. Much as been said regarding teacher assistants recently and the fact that the new budget would cut up to if not more than 70 teacher assistants district wide. Holliday sent out an email to employees on Friday that, as he said earlier "no teachers would lose their jobs". However, later in the email he stated that the teacher assistants would most likely be cut and they should look at any open transfers i.e. primetime, bus driver, custodian. Please .... we are taking teacher assistants and asking them to apply for an opening as a custodian. Now, I understand the budget and if you were privy to the Holliday email and a teacher, you would thank god for a job, but you parents out there better get outraged and start calling Raleigh because any and all advances made in EOG's and graduation rates was a direct result of everyone's effort, including all of the teacher assistants. Who kept the teacher's schedules on track when they had to deal with Baldridge? Who taught the children when the teachers had to attend Baldridge meetings? Who managed the classrooms when subs were brought in? Who managed the tremendous clerical tasks involved with the everyday running of the classrooms. Who drove the buses and got the children to and from school safetly, unlike CMS which was in the news almost daily with bus accidents. Now the district will attempt to hire part time bus drivers and will have to lower their standards. Do you want your child to ride that bus? I read this blog and heard that only five people showed up for the last meeting. Shame on everyone reading and posting to this blog. Even if you don't agree with what Holliday is doing you better get involved if you care about your children. Holliday says that this is the only district that hasn't laid off teachers and he is proud of that ... but he makes no mention of the impact that the lack of teacher assisants will have on the children. Shame on him! He says that from the principle up he is asking for a cut in pay ... great but what could have been done to save those teacher assistant jobs? Parents need to get involved and find out what is happening in their individual schools.
ReplyDeleteThere may have been some gains in scores. But remember, it is not a fair comparison to last years scores. In order to have a fair comparison we must see the first score and than compare it to last years score.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had an absolutely wonderful science teacher. She loved Mrs.Dearman. She is an angel in disguise. Bless her. She teaches at North Iredell High School. She also loved her PE teacher Mr.Poole, and now she says he has left. She said he was such a patient teacher and was such a great role model. Why do all the wonderful teachers go?
ReplyDeletePaul - this is an excellent idea to take time out and highlight the hard work and excellence found within the school system
ReplyDeleteOver my 27 yrs. with ISS, I have come in contact with so many excellent teachers and assistants. I have had the honor of working with loving and caring TA's. When I changed schools, I worryed about my new TA. Not being familiar with the school and staff, I prayed that I would get one that I could have a good working relationship with. I was assigned someone that not only did I have a great working relationship with, I also found a friend. She made my job so much easier. Lori was always at least 2 steps ahead of me when it came to doing things for the children. She quickly adapted to my way of teaching and was always willing to do what was needed. I miss working with her.
ReplyDeleteTeachers can do without all the extra Central office personnel, and all the Instuctional facilitators that should be teaching, but they cannot do with out the wonderful assistants in the classroom. Students need extra help all the time, and we definitely cannot afford to hire tutors for the price we pay for assistants. Much thanks and appreciation to all those hard working assistants.
ReplyDeleteAmen to above comment! It should be a simple enough concept to understand---students need as low a teacher-to-student ratio as possible. Common sense dictates that extra help, (whether it takes the form of helping students who are behind catch up, or stretching students who would benefit from more in depth work on the subject being studied)...will result in more learning.
