At the Board of Education meeting last Monday, Mr. Johnson announced that I-SS will be officially receiving the Baldrige National Quality Award in Washington DC on Wednesday, December 2nd. Mr. Johnson also mentioned that President Obama will be presenting the award.

  1. Paul, why does it matter who is going? Do you expect us to declare these people our enemies now? Again, more useless information. I would suggest that you quit while you still have some credability left. Whoops! Too late.

  2. I changed my mind. One might ask if this site is so useless why do critics still read it. The amusement factor is wonderful, keep it going. We need the comic relief! Woo Hoo! Go Paul!

  3. If Obama is for Baldridge that is another reason to be against it.

  4. The oldest George Bush started Baldrige. Obama just happened to have to do it.

  5. I wish the rude person had his or her own blog. Some people must have no friends, and that is why he or she always has to make rude remarks against anyone who may have a different opinion.
Paul is kind enough to let you open your mouth and give your unvalued opinion. Now stuff it, I am sick of rudeness.

  6. True, November 14, 2009 10:59 PM ... also, the person for which the "award" is named --- Malcolm Baldrige -- was a member of Ronald Reagan's cabinet. He was the Secretary of Commerce .

Education is not commerce, children are not products--they are distinctively diverse human beings, not widgets in a factory.

  7. Education is a many facet persona of its own. It is a big business at the top, but when it comes to dealing with students it is multi-tasking position. Human beings are human beings. Students learn in many different ways. Our system has tried to force cloned teaching upon every child. One size does not fit every child. Teachers have to adapt to the students in their classrooms and they are different every year. Classroom teachers would be so boring if they taught the same way. Some classrooms are very lively and others are not. Students learn and adapt quickly to the teacher. That is what human beings do. Many of our schools were doing very well and making their goals way before Baldrige techniques were introduced to the whole system. In fact, those schools that were doing Baldrige at the beginning of it, were the schools that failed. Businessess do not change what does work. They continue to work on improvement and they do get rid of what does not work for them. Schools do just the opposite. It does not matter that many schools were doing great without a new program, but it was forced upon them. Many schools were doing great with their Math programs, but all of a sudden every school had to have the same math program. It would be nice to know who got the kick-back from this math program. It is absolutely ridiculous to think that an urban school and a rural school can be taught using all the same materials. There are real differences in students ,and they must be taught the way they can learn. Money also does not provide equality at some schools. Technology is definitely not equal in all schools. Some schools have Smartboards in all classrooms ,and some schools may have one Smartboard. If we really let our SIT teams run our schools, then they should be allowed to choose the programs that work. Two programs that were researched very well , Saxon Phonics and Excel math gave our students a headstart in education, but now they are gone. In this system when it works, we get rid of it. If it is not worth anything, we hang on to it. Our system is made of many paradoxes and they do not work, except on paper.

  8. November 14, 2009 11:03 PM. paul Klaene is wasting valuable taxpayer time while trying to find something with which to make a name for himself. Yes, he has pointed out some wrongs but he has also dug up useless information in an attempt to make himself appear a hero. He is no hero, he is nothing more than a pain in the a@@. He is divisive and mean spirited and is only looking to promote himself as a savior not better the school system. He has a vendetta as do Munday and Dulin. None have looked for answers to problems they have only looked for problems. No matter what is fixed they will always be finding more problems and pointing fingers.

Paul you wanted a better superintendant. Brady Johnson has bent over backwards to give you any and everything you have asked for and you are still angry because his position wasn't decided on properly using gathered data. Isn't all the gathered data what you and your koolaid drinking followers have been complaining about with the Baldrige stuff? Teachers don't get to teach, they have to gather data. But yet you want the BOE (who I don't like either) to spend months gathering data when Brady Johnson was obviously who the vast majority wanted in.

You are petty and mean spirited and only trying to make a name for yourself. Well, you have succeeded.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Also, Brady Johnson obviously has not kept his word about how he would get data from the teachers. The surveys handed out were different from the principals survey. There were different questions and there was no abandon box. Brady's excuse was that he was afraid the teachers would check abandon but not explain why. Apparantly he has more faith in the principals opinion than teachers because they as well could have ommitted the reason for checking abandon. The whole system is two faced starting with the BOE and Brady Johnson and it certainly won't be fixed any time soon, if ever. I have an idea that the BOE knew all along that they wanted Johnson as superintendant. Johnson has shown me that he has the ability to be kind hearted and have an open door policy while still ignoring the desires of the teachers and the public. He is the ultimate politician. John Rogers is another slick daddy in a good guy suit. Even though he is out shaking hands and kissing babies he is no different than the other BOE members at heart. The whole bunch is as slick as owl crap. You don't get to the top by doing the right thing, not in today's society. Those at the top are there because they understand each other, not because they understand and represent those they serve.

  10. Isn't identification of a problem the first step in solving it? That said, Paul Klaene, Janie Munday and Renee Dulin are not part of I-SS administration. They are concerned citizens who have every right to dig for the truth, to question motives, actions, and the blatant lack of response to tax-payer/parent/teacher concerns and issues.

Everyone is always talking about how all those at the top should be mega-bucks because they earn them. Well, solving problems is what they are paid to do.

Teachers are not paid to solve administrative problems, and neither are Mr. Klaene, Janie Munday nor Renee Dulin. ALL Iredell County citizens DO have the right to expose and publicize problems that are ignored by those who should be addressing them in an open and honest way.

    ReplyDelete
  11. *correction: should be PAID mega-bucks

    ReplyDelete
  12. Klaene, Mundane and Dulin are only in this to identify problems and nothing more. They are unhappy dificult people who have no life outside of attacking the schools sytem. You are correct in saying that we need concerned citizens but we don't need what they are bringing to the table which is bitterness and division. You need to identify problems and find solutions that fit everyone. They have no interest in bringing peace.

And another group I ommitted in my above statements is the teachers. It has been said that many of the teachers have not been taking and turning in the survey because they figure there is no use. If that is true then that is just more bitterness and unwillingness to find answers. It seems that all involved in the system are acting on their own behalf.

  13. November 15, 2009 9:49 AM, Did you even read post November 15, 2009 9:41 AM ?

"Teachers are not paid to solve administrative problems, and neither are Mr. Klaene, Janie Munday nor Renee Dulin."

The tax-payers are paying teachers to manage their classrooms and to teach. They are paying top school system administrators (Lord, knows there sure are A LOT of top administrators!) to solve problems and address concerns. Mr. Klaene and the others are providing an invaluable public service.

The public cannot make informed voting decisions if they do not have unfiltered information. Prior to Mr. Klaene's altruistic investigations and subsequent exposure of misdeeds, mismanagement and general ignoring of acting the best interest of I-SS students... the only information Iredell citizens received was from the local paper. The SR&L only prints what I-SS tells them to...the cronyism in this town is pathetic and it certainly does not serve the best interest of I-SS students. The 'good old boy network' runs things...this has gone on for much too long.

So sorry if the truth is inconvenient for those caught in its snare.

  14. 9:13 am - wonderful post! ;) You won't get many responses because it's the truth. This math program is horrible! 9:38 was a great post too, I assume it was the same person. Brady is a great politician - take the oppostiion (Kleane) in right from the begining and tell them just enough excuses to get them on your side.

Teachers complain about PDSA - well we'll take off two questions and everything will be all better! Some schools don't know or have not implemented this monumental change anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am 9:13 and not 9:38. Election time will come soon, and it is time to vote the way you feel.
If you hate the way the BOE handles things, then get out the vote. I have talked to many parents who are as concerned as our teachers. We need to get them registered, and let their votes talk. Otherwise, it is going to be the same old politics and nothing will change.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Unfornatly, all the voters see is what they read in the paper and what the politicians (Brady/BOE) tell them. Unless you know a teacher personally, it's not easy to know the truth, and even easier to ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My problem is that I am a parent and a teacher. My issues are often ignored about my child because I work for this system. They have no concern for the employees or the parents. All you get in this system is a run-around and back to you philosophy. They never solve anything.

    ReplyDelete
  18. November 15, 2009 10:14 AM ... obviously you haven't been reading. Teachers have been asking for input for a LONG time. I want their input as well. I am not asking them to solve problems but they have the information that is required to make good decisions.

  19. Also November 15, 2009 7:44 PM all I can add to that is AMEN.

  20. To November 15, 9:26AM:
Please explain how Paul Klaene is wasting taxpayers' money by maintaining his blog?

  21. Oops! The above comment should read as follows: How is Paul Klaene wasting taxpayers' TIME by maintaining his blog?

I apologize for the mistake in wording.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Did anyone say the BLOG had anything to do with it? Do I really have to explain it to you? Give me a break. You must really be out of valid come backs.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Too bad Paul is not a dictator or someone would not be free to express their rude comments. He could just cancel you out.

  24. How ironic that Matthew Fail was in charge of picking the random teachers' names out of a pool of hundreds and he chose his wife's name for the trip to the BNQP ceremony. How lucky was that?????

    ReplyDelete
  25. From where do the funds to pay for this trip come?....and I mean ALL expenses, because December 2nd is on a Wednesday which a school day. Will the system be reimbursed for this missed day of work for this very long list of automatons---uh, I mean people?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Don't you know money magically appears when it comes to covering anything Baldridge?

Assistants are being shifted around from school to school because some schools are more understaffed than others, tutoring programs were cut, but there's always money for people to go to a Baldridge presentation or raise CO salaries!

    ReplyDelete
  27. The money comes strictly from the Baldrige grant- money that was provided by Baldrige to cover travel expenses. This includes money for subs.

As for Mathew Fail's wife, her name was drawn from the lottery that all I-SS employees were eligible to enter. Her name was chosen from a Ziploc bag. I was there- I saw it. Totally on the up-and-up. If you look at the list, you'll also notice that Mathew's name is obviously missing. He is not going, and is eligible to. Quit picking on the Fails, particularly if you don't know them. They're actually great people.

I realize most of you people post your replies in an effort to boost transparency by the district. I have no problem with that. What I do, however, have a problem with, is attacking people you don't even know in the process. What's worse is that you do it with so few of the actual facts. If you want accurate information, just ask for it. Believe it or not, but there are folks at the central office who are willing to provide it. Until you're willing to ask for correct information and stop hiding under the cloak of "transparency" and "reform" and "openness" and "honesty" and all these virtues you want from the central office and STOP using this as a forum to bash people you don't even know (the Fails, Brady Johnson, the BOE, etc.), I guarantee you'll see few solutions to the real problems that plague the district.

  28. Why in the world is it necessary for such a large number of people to go gallivanting and attend this purchased "award" ceremony?

I don't see Brady Johnson's name on the list either....isn't he going, oh all-knowing-one?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Is all-knowin going to the Baldrige Award?? We can't wait for that glowing report on this blog that he or she thinks is so wasteful. I think some parents should have been invited to go, especially PTO officers.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sounds to me that some people are upset because they aren't going to thwe awards. Jealousy and envy has fueled the comments on here. I am grateful that I can continue teaching, focusing on my students and not get caught up in all of the bitterness and witchhunts that are the basis of this Blog.

Eight more years and I will be able to retire away from pettiness and hostility of those who call themselves teachers. I will especially be thrilled to get away from those ex-teachers who have no lives and are constantly causing problems with their gossip.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mathew Fail is going, as his email said "we are leaving at 6am" He is not on the list because he is a Balrige examiner. He does not count in the 50 attendees from ISS, just as Dr. Holiday does not count as an examiner. Brady Johnson is going as well as several board members. Why can't Mathew Fail just be honest and transparent rather than fake that he is not going just to avoid conflict since his wife is going too. He will soon be working out of state too, so I guess he just wants to hide on his way out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. that list is way out of date and the original list had different titles for people, now they changed it. another switch-o, change-o See no change here Mr. Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 7:21 - you have no clue. Mr. Fail is not going, heard it straight from his mouth. Guess we can wait and see next week right. Are you willing to come back on the blog next week and admit that you were wrong once he doesn't go? Probably not, you would rather just stir the pot about things that you know nothing about.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The question remains, why is the list so l-o-n-g?

This is a purchased "award," but for the sake of appearances (which do not amount to a hill of beans in real life) but just so the Baldrige Charade can finally be brought to its conclusion...just send Johnson. Why in the world is the huge 'posse' a necessity? Of course, we all know the answer to that question...it isn't!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I will bet that if they invited Paul Klaene he would be waiting with bags in hand before the bus pulled up! Sour grapes, that is all this is.

    ReplyDelete
  36. November 27, 2009 12:38 AM, are you dotty?

What in the world was in your cranberry sauce yesterday?!?

  37. I am Not jealous of the Baldrige award. If it is not a true award for something you really did ,then it is worthless. I have more important things to do in life. This too will pass and the end of the world may come too, and I do hope some of you are prepared for it. With your better than thou attitude , I am worried for you as a human being. A true educator has empathy for all people, no matter their opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A true educator has empathy for all people, no matter their opinions.

Oh yeah! Paul Klaene is FULL of empathy! More like bitterness born out of a life without a reason. You are getting back what you put out.

  39. I am very proud to be part of this award. My students, fellow teachers and I worked very hard to create a student-centered learning environmnet where it is not only about what we are learning but how we will learn it. Anyone who thinks this award was bought should look into the eyes of my 7 year olds and tell them that they didn't work hard to reach all of their goals last year. Tha problem with society today is that no one really wants to take responsibility for anything and if something does work and it's not your idea than it must have been bought. Well, that is fine....I am sorry that you are embarrassed to work for this school district but I will hold my head high and remember that my students will be representing the future.....I place where knowing "how" is just as important as knowing "what".

    ReplyDelete
  40. Good for you and your students. All those of us who do not need nor desire the constraints of Baldrige do wish to mandate a ban on Baldrige---as mandates can lead to conformity and in the words of JFK "Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth."

Rather, we want the freedom to use our diverse array of assets to the very best benefit of our students.

And regardless of what you think, the award was purchased...read back over the posts that provide documentation of this irrefutable fact.

    ReplyDelete
  41. November 29, 2009 5:18 PM if you are proud to be a part of this award and you are holding your head high why are you anonymous? Just some more of the Paul Klaene rhetoric.

  42. The emperor was very proud and was yet very stupid. He couldn't see until the child cried "Why the emperor has no clothes on!" Some cannot see for being so blind for so long. One day, students will grow up and really see. The world has many cycles, and you have to change with it. All things are not perfect, and neither is any one program. Those who are most creative do not need to be cloned. Great teachers teach with programs or without programs.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Correction:

"All those of us who do not need nor desire the constraints of Baldrige do wish to mandate a ban on Baldrige-"

  47. Teachers are professionals.Baldrige should be by choice only. Classrooms should be run by teachers and if they fail to do their job, then someone should come in and mentor. If Baldrige works then use it and if not, do not.
Teachers teach the NC Curriculum and that is that.
