In my last post, I stated that at the last Board meeting Mr. Johnson announced several shifts in personnel to cover positions as he assumed the role of interim superintendent. I also reported that he mentioned that with these changes and the retirement of Steve Hill, I-SS would be saving about a hundred thousand dollars and redirecting about seventy-five thousand dollars. I e-mailed Mr. Johnson and asked him about these amounts and if any of the Central Office employees would be receiving raises due the shifts in personnel, and if so, how much of a raise each person would receive. In addition, I asked how the raises would relate to the 2% furlough initiated last month. The following is from the response that I received from Mr. Johnson.
The money saved will be used to offset some of the other cuts. I'm not sure where yet, but we will hold onto those funds for a few weeks. I'll will probably use them as part of our central off discretionary reduction to the state which is about $184,000. I have a couple other jobs that we plan to fill with part time people or just not fill this year. (CTE Director and the Director of Recruitment). One of my goals is to rehire the TAs that have been laid off.
The redirection is coming from the FLC Grant, I will not fill the job of the current FLC director who is moving to another county due to her husband taking a new job with a community college. What I plan to do is shift those responsibilities to the Associate Superintendent of Learning. The money saved from her salary will then be put back in the Title II funds which is currently where part of the salary comes from. All the people that were moved into interim positions have been given a salary increase to reflect their new responsibilities during this interim period. When the new superintendent is hired everyone returns to their old job and their old salary. The 2% still comes off the new salary as well for all the people who serve in interim positions.
Brady Johnson
Mr. Johnson did not tell me how much of a salary increase each employee received. I sent a reply to Mr. Johnson and asked him for that information. I will write another post when I get the amount of the raises.
Perhaps I am just not getting it! Why did all of these people need to move to interim positions? Holliday is gone and Mr. Johnson moved to his position .. ok.. that left Mr. Johnson's old position open. Why couldn't one or two people pull the weight of that job? Isn't that what every other business in every other industry has done and is doing in tough economic times? All of this movement and raises to go along with it is simply outrageous when employees have been cut. Many counties are calling back their TA's with the budget now final. What is ISS's stand on that?
ReplyDeleteThere are many things that many people aren't getting. Just trust Mr. Johnson to do the right thing and you do your part.
ReplyDeletetrust mr. Johnson to do the right thing? wow thats funny, the ship is sinking fast and we are gonna trust someone who is just hanging around untill june when he retires... this county is in real trouble if the entire staff just sits back and trusts someone that can't even come up with more than a principal survey as a business model.
ReplyDeleteSo, the question was answered. Someone said that the new interim folks got raises, and many here disagreed. Guess you were all wrong. First thing Mr. Johnson did was move people around so that he could give administrators more money. Not until after that was accomplished did he move to re-hire the TAs. And you ask us to trust him? How is he any different from Dr. Holliday? Oh, I forgot; he was nice to Paul Klaene. That seems to be what this blog is all about - being nice to Mr. Klaene. You can do anything else - including giving even MORE money to administrators - but if you're nice to Paul Klaene - we should trust you.
ReplyDeleteDon't fight it my friend; it's always the same and always will be. The rich get richer. That's why it is important to get a good education - so you can be among the rich!
ReplyDeleteThere are many teachers in the classroom with many degrees. They decided they would rather be with the students in a classroom, instead of the big bucks elsewhere. It takes a special person to teach. Otherwise, those with the big bucks would not have had a basis education to jumpstart them.
ReplyDelete7:48pm How true. Many in college right now are foregoing degrees in teaching because of what is going on right now. It used to be that teaching was recession proof, not anymore. 6:38pm - somewhat true. why did they give admin. moves and raises prior to bringing back the TA's first. They could have waited until the budget was finalized prior to making the admin changes to see if the funding was coming through. Many districts brought back the TA's long ago. I think you are both right. Remember, it takes time to build trust. Trust is not a given, not to say that one can not be given a chance to prove oneself. What we need to do now is give Mr. Johnson a chance to prove himself. Even if he is only there for a short time. He seems to have no problem in making "interim" decisions and he will be judged by those decisions, as short term as they may be. I have noticed that the comments on this blog have slowed. Perhaps that is because people are willing to have a "wait and see" attitude or they may have simply become tired of the craziness and lack of focus. I hope that it is the latter.
ReplyDeleteI say we are all lucky to have jobs and should quit complaining.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the above poster only to a certain extent because it's a sweat shop philosophy. Yes, having a job is wonderful; however, that does not mean you shouldn't be allowed to voice your opinion over the working conditions. If you can't do that, then we should all be working in third-world sweat shops.
ReplyDeleteYou can hardly call a new air-conditioned building and a nice classroom a sweat shop. Please! Teachers are better off than they ever were. I've been teaching for 25 years and I remember when classrooms were not even air- conditioned. Sometimes, I think we as teachers have become greedy - we want everything perfect, and that's not going to happen. We need to just be thankful for what we have.
ReplyDeleteI am happy when I can voice my opinion. If we are ever going to have continuous improvement then we have to put the issues out there for all to see.We have to discuss them with respect to each other. Many teachers choose to teach or they could go to the central office. Teachers have many days they do not leave school because of meetings and staff development. There are teachers out there who would like to further their education but it is not practical because of money and other obstacles, families or such.
ReplyDeleteTeachers do give more of themselves than anyone else, for far less money than those in the business field do. There are many great teachers out there, and then there are some teachers and Central Office staff that need to go. We are workers and in all fields there are politics, but we should be respectful of them all. Everyone should have a voice in life, and noone deserves to be bullied. The problem is we all need to learn how to listen carefully and not be so judgmental.
No, it's not a sweat shop, and the classroom isn't being compared to one. To, however, say that you shouldn't be allowed to voice opinion over working conditions is a sweat shop "philosophy". By the way, 25 years ago many buildings didn't have air conditioning, and I also worked in a building before without it. Also, if you can't voice your opinion about problems you see, nothing will ever change. I'm sure you're enjoying air-conditioning now, so hopefully advocated for you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for advocating for me to have air conditioning. Strangely, I thought we were discussing something else. I got lost in all the verbiage. Anyway, thanks for the air conditioning - I love it!
ReplyDeleteIF TEACHERS ARE SO GREEDEY ,THEN WHY DO THEY SPEND THEIR OWN MONEY ON SUPPLIES? GREEDY PEOPLE DON'T SHARE. I'D LIKE TO SEE HOW MANY TEACHERS GIVE THEIR FAIR SHARE TO UNITED WAY AND MANY OTHER CHARITIES. IF THEY STOP SHARING ,PERHAPS OTHERS CAN PICK UP THEIR FAIR SHARE.
ReplyDeleteTHAT IS NOT COUNTING BUYING CLOTHES AND SHOES FOR CHILDREN IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. YES, TEACHERS ARE VERY SELFISH PEOPLE. IF THE TEACHERS DID NOT GIVE TO THE UNITED WAY, I WONDER HOW OUR DISTRICT WOULD LOOK AS UNITED WAY DONOR. WOULDN'T THAT BE SAD?
