Update On The CO Reorganization Plan

On Wednesday, I sent Dawn Creason an e-mail in which I asked for information regarding the individuals (Kris Earl, Judy Honeycutt, Mathew Fail, Linda Gillon, Brenda Clark, Linda Rogers, Carol McCrory, Doug Wooten, Rob Jackson, and Steve Hampton) who were listed on the February 2010 I-SS organizational chart but who were not listed on the I-SS organizational chart submitted to the Board by Mr. Johnson as part of his reorganization plan.

I received the following reply from Ms. Creason on Thursday.

Mr. Klaene-

I just had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Johnson and discuss the organizational chart.

Coite Sherrill, Chip Weddington, Reginald Brown, Dorothy Woodard, Pam Stewart, Carol McCrory, Mathew Fail, and Brenda Clark will no longer be I-SS employees. Mathew Fail has already left the district, and all others will be completing their work at the end of June.

However, Mr. Johnson has added Kelly Cooper (executive director of middle grades education), Jessica Mellen (Title II administrator) and Tim Ivey (Focused Learning Communities grant director).

Kris Earl is a full-time employee of the EC department. Judy Honeycutt is a part-time employee (retired and returned) working with career & technical education as the career development counselor, Linda Gillon remains the full-time classified personnel coordinator, and Doug Wooten, Rob Jackson, and Steve Hampton (1/2 grant paid) remain in their previous capacities.

Mr. Johnson shared with me that the organizational chart has been reduced to only list department heads. His ultimate plan is to provide individual department organizational charts as well. He asked me to coordinate this effort just this afternoon. As soon as I am able to contact each department leader, I will ensure that all central office personnel are listed on the website, both in directory format as well as organizational chart format.

Five of the individuals mentioned by Ms. Creason were not on the February 2010 organizational chart. I don’t know what was the administrative status of those individuals (Coite Sherrill, Chip Weddington, Reginald Brown, Dorothy Woodard, and Pam Stewart). But, looking at the two organizational charts and the information provided by Ms. Creason, there were 3 individuals (Carol McCrory, Mathew Fail, and Brenda Clark) who were on the February organizational chart and who will no longer be employed by I-SS and three individuals (Kelly Cooper, Jessica Mellen, and Tim Ivey) who will be new additions to the organizational chart with 7 individuals (Kris Earl, Judy Honeycutt, Linda Gillon, Doug Wooten, Rob Jackson, and Steve Hampton) who will continue to be employed as CO administrators but will not be listed on the main I-SS administrative chart.

Therefore, is this a true reduction in administrative positions, is it a restructuring of the organizational charts to make a clearer distinction in responsibilities, or is just smoke and mirrors to make it look like a reduction in administrative positions?

  2. It wouldn't be difficult to figure this one out: list the admins and positions last year and their equal part for this year. The most telling factor would be to list their salaries. I read somewhere that Dale Ellis as 3 people in his department making over $100,000 - ouch!

  3. I was told that Coite Sherrill was only furloughed for a few months. Then, he will be back. Is that also the case for the others? That is the smoke and mirrors part. Now you don't see them, soon you will! voila! Brady Johnson's deceitfulness strikes again! Part of the problem, Paul is that once Terry Holliday left - you thought all would be well. You forget the old maxim - power corrupts! Brady has been corrupted by the power! He WAS a nice guy, but now isn't.

  5. What we need is not a count of the positions - but a count of the dollars. Find out what each one is paid - over and above grant dollars, and then figure out what the new positions will require in salary dollars. See what the difference is, and post it please! Only that dollar difference tells us what the actual reduction is.

  6. I still can't figure out why we need three $100,000 administrators in human Resources when one person used to do it all. And wasn't that BEFORE we had a reduction in force? So now we are paying three times as much for less work? What goes on here!!

  7. I understand that of those who have been laid off - about 5 of them were actually paid with grant dollars, or partially paid with grant dollars. So, what is the actual saving? They weren't costing the district anything, but all three of the new positions are costing the district plenty! I also vote for door number 3!!

So, if it turns out that Coite Sherrill has only been furloughed and will be returning after 2 or 3 months, would that be a deliberate deception - if you were told that he will no longer be an I-SS employee? Or, does it not count as a lie if you just failed to ask the right question? Interesting ethical issue.

  9. June 21 - 10:43: Are you saying that Dawn Creason is deliberately lying about Coite Sherrill being laid off? What would they do, say they didn't know he was going to be rehired? This gets scarier and scarier.

  10. Brady Johnson..."corrupted by power." You guys are a hoot. Brady Johnson is the most honest, decent public servant this county has seen in my lifetime. You flatter yourselves by thinking that he should try to please you, or that he needs your advice, or that he even gives you a passing thought during his 80 hour workweek. He is not serving as superintendent for his personal enjoyment or because he needs you as a friend. He is serving because he was asked by the Board of Ed to serve his community at a crucial time. ISS needs Mr. Johnson more than he needs ISS.

    Like all great leaders, Brady Johnson does what he thinks is right for those he serves, in this case the students of Iredell County. He doesn't (and can't) let you waste his time with your naysaying, negativity, hidden agendas, conspiracy theories, hallucinations, windmills and vanity. If he did, he would not be effective.

    I think it's hilarious that many of you who post to this blog and the R&L website think that the leaders you constantly criticize actually read your venom. I hate to tell you, they don't. Your comments serve only to boost your own personal egos and to plant doubt into the minds of those too uninformed to see they are being misled or too ignorant to care.

    Realizing that some people need to be constantly involved in a crisis or a "cause" in order to help them feel good about themselves (even if, as is the case with Mr. Klaene's site, it has to be a self created cause) why don't y'all volunteer at a homeless shelter or save a pound puppy. If you, as you say you do, really want to help the children of Iredell County, why don't you use your talents and energies in positive ways instead of trying to tear down those few selfless individuals who have the courage to step forward and lead.

Obviously you don't understand things correctly or are just too blind to see things for the way they REALLY are. Or maybe, just maybe you WORK for Mr. Johnson and are simply trying to defend him. Whatever the case is, don't bore us with your cheap shots. YOU took the time to read these posts and then comment, so what does that make you? Just as hilarious?? And for the record, there ARE school board members who actually DO read this blog....and comment on it. Pay attention!!

    LOL @ 3 people in HR making over 100,000. The HR people combined (all 7 of them probably total a little more than 100,000 a year for yearly salaries..again, COMBINED). You have access to Linda Gillon's salary, so request it. You can also request Bill Long's. Mr. Long's will be the only one besides Dale Ellis's that comes anywhere near 100,000. There's no hidden money in HR, if there were, the people who work their tales off in there would make more than custodians. - Total untruth. If you're going to post something, at least make it believable. - Don't lie just to stir the pot.

    You have people in HR who do 2 and 3 people's jobs and never get anything but a hard time from people for it. Mr. Klaene, I think you are well aware of that. Very rarely, they get someone who actually says THANK YOU for taking care of their request.

    Any time I have ever made a request to anybody in HR for any information or help with benefits, answering questions about leave or any type of policy, I've had someone get right back to me, give me accurate information and assistance, and not had any complaints. I wouldn't be so quick to judge the people in that department, or pick at their salaries if I were you all. I can guarantee you, I've looked at the salary lists when they've been posted on the R & L and have found very few employees from that department who made the cutoff of the last few years of what was it, 25,000.00 a year?

  13. I thought Mr.Ellis was leaving the district to become the superintendent in Kannapolis City Schools. What happen did they not pay as much as ISS.

  19. The 3 people making $100,000 or more in HR are Dale Ellis, Bill Long and Jed Stuss. The person so absurdly defending HR sounds as if he works in HR. Clearly, the posts indicated "administrators" in HR - no one else.

    Please take down this blog. You are exposing yourself (and those who post anonymous comments) to civil litigation for defamation. Recent court cases demonstrate that isp numbers can be obtained, and posters can be identified. The comments should be policed and removed if they cross the line, but you either cannot or will not do that, so please take down this blog. If you do not, I invite others here who are insulted and repulsed by the mean-spirited and un-Christian comments left by the members of this community, to bury the blog. All we have to do is post often and voluminously any and every article we can put our hands on. After awhile, people grow weary of wading through all of the tripe to get to the gossip, and quit even looking at it. So, if Paul doesn't start monitoring this blog, let's blam it.

  30. lol Yes, it's a conspiracy. I work in HR, just because I defended the department. (I actually worked with Pam, but I'm sure that makes it even more of a conspiracy that I'm defending the wicked people of Human Resources!!).

    As for Jed Stus being in HR, that's news to me. Last I heard, he was still in the now defunct Quality Department, or some such place @ ADR.

  31. My wife recently received some excellent assistance from the HR department as she was getting everything in place for her retirement. I certainly do not think that anyone at the Central Office is wicked and I know there are a number of individuals working at the CO who deserve every dime they earn. The question, as I see it, is with the overall direction of the School System and whether or not the limited budget is being spent wisely and in the best interest of the students.

  32. I agree that most deserve their salaries however one has to wonder why people like the IFs and ITs work 11 months. They helped at curriculum week but wouldn't the system save more money if they were paid $100 a day stipend like us instead of being paid for 11 months. Are these people "essential" for 11 months???

I don't feel as if the employees of HR should be ridiculed for what they do or should they have to figuratively pay for the alleged faults (used "alleged" because we don't want to be accused of libeling or defaming anyone's character, now, do we??) of the administrators above them. The personnel in HR do work very hard and should not be judged otherwise.
