No Decision Today

The Courier-Journal in Louisville Ky. and The Daily Independent in Ashland Ky. are both reporting that the Kentucky Board of Education did not make a selection for the new education commissioner today. According to the reports, the Board chairman, Joe Brothers, said that they still have four candidates after the day long meeting that began around 7 a.m. and didn't end until after 4 p.m. Brothers said the board will continue to do background checks on the applicants and review information and data it has requested from the four finalists. But he said he’s confident the board will choose the next commissioner at its next meeting, scheduled for Friday, July 17 at the board’s offices in Frankfort.
Both papers quote Dr. Holliday talking about the Kentucky Education Commissioner position. The Daily Independent reports: “This is my pinnacle job, this is the job I’ve always gone after, leading at the state level,” Holliday said. Holliday, who is 58, said if he’s hired he expects to remain in the job for at least nine years. The Courier-Journal reports: "This is the job I always wanted," said Holliday.
Isn't that just about what he has been telling everyone in Iredell County about the I-SS superintendent's position? And all this time he has been looking for his pinnacle job. Well I hope he gets that job. It won't take long for the citizens of Kentucky to realize where they want to stick that pinnacle.

  1. Oh how times change and to think he recently said he would not retire from his current job until the graduation rate was at 100%. Perhaps he should just skip the Kentucky job and go straight to Washington with his slick talk and desire for transparency.

  2. He has got to be Washington bound! Why else would he be so anxious to become state level?
The silver tongued devil has perfected talking out both sides of his mouth, become an expert of manipulating the data, learned how to misuse taxpapers money, and can lie straight-faced. YEP,
he's ready. Which political party is he affiliated with?

  3. The blog mentioned Dr. Hollidays blog on the ISS webpage. It might be very interesting for all to read his latest blog regarding paradoxes and the comments from the "stakeholders". It appears that people are starting wake up and they are asking him the tough questions as well.

  4. A background check is being done?? Hmmmm, I wonder if that lawsuit he was involved in during his tenure in Transylvania County will show up?? It involved covering up what happened to a disabled child at the hands of a Teacher Assistant. Interestingly, I don't think the TA was ever found.

  5. This blog is great! This question is a little of topic but with all the budget talk etc. can someone discuss how charter schools i.e. Pine Lakes, not impose a .5% cut of their teachers pay in June, and their TA's are salary not hourly and they receive comp time, and how can charter schools justify hiring consultants at over $30-$50/hrly when teachers are taking cuts. There are charter schools and some ISS schools who employ consultants other than Brenda Clarke that are speach therapists and counselors making large sums of money. Aren't charter schools given federal money for students in the same manner as the district schools?

  6. Charter Schools care about the children. The children come first. So, if the children need support services to be successful, then the money is in the budget. The charter school parents are allowed to be involved. The parents hold fundraisers to provide for the teachers and the students. This is the way it is supposed to be. The money is used for the children instead of $1,800.00 an hour consultants. The charter school does not spend money to Jim Shipley for PDSA printed materials. The charter school provides children an opportunity to be children in an environment where children are provided a great deal of hands-on learning. The charter school does not give predictive assessmnets or common formative assessments everyweek. The federal funding is spent the way it is supposed to be. The charter schools also have waiting lists for parents wishing to enroll their children. It's all about the children.

  7. Mr. Klaene is right on target! I want him out of Iredell County but would rather he not be inflicted on the good citizens of Kentucky. No matter though, as he will not stay in Kentucky when something "better" comes along. Hang in there, Kentucky, he won't be there long enough to do damage that you cannot repair once he is gone.

  8. In my above comment, I stated that I want "him" out of Iredell County. I was, of course, referring to Holliday.

  9. what if... this job is part of Holliday's strategic plan to bring in the Baldridge Bunch, get promoted, leave the Baldridge Bunch, and then entice the remaing Baldridge Bunch with money and a chance of promotion in order to try and show Kentucky his model for excellence. Just a thought, and a reason that this committee must not let their guard down. This man is pure evil, but you've got to admit he is smart. Watch out America. Lets hope he doesn't run for Secretary of Education.

  10. Go to the charlotte observer website and enter Lake Norman Charter into their search area. Nice story from the Observer about teacher cuts at a local charter school. The Charter Schools sound like a great place to be. How many teachers have ISS cut?

  11. Prediction - Holliday is selected and accepts the KY post - Does he take anyone with him? What happens to the people left behind? Does Clarke stay or go? What is the length of her contract? Who leads the system? Will the fear factor go away? Will the fear go away? How will the adversaries of Holliday/Baldrige and the opponents of Holliday/Baldrige mend their differences (This will be very important)? Most teachers will do what they have always done. They will go to their classrooms and diligently work with students and feel at peace if they are being left alone. Standard course of study, EOC's,EOG's will force the teacher to focus on the established curriculum and not focus on their particular interest. But, let those very good and exceptional teachers use their creativity. Teaching is not a pure science. There are many skills/talents that cannot be measured. That is what makes some teachers estremely valuable and special to individual students.

  12. That should be proponents rather than adversaries in the above post (July 9, 11:45)

  13. I understand that Doc Holliday has stated on several occasions that he wants to retire in Iredell County, that he is very satisfied with his position though he also states that he is underpaid. This is yet another example of him talking out of both sides of his mouth. He is only in education for what he can get out of it for himself. His price is way too high on all levels. Everyone pays but Holliday.

  14. It's all about the money for Holliday...and running away from the impossible to keep promises that he has been making concerning the IB schools and the magnet school. No preparation for specially designed curricula has been done by a curriculum specialist for these non-traditional schools. The students will take the same EOG's/EOC's as traditionally prepared students. As usual, it's all being left up to the teachers to try and figure out how they can try to fulfill the absurdly unrealistic promises Holliday has made to parents and the public.
Teachers are not paid with six figure salaries, as many administrators are, but they are expected to do the work that administration should be doing, and to do it for free! Of course, it is obvious who suffers most in these scenarios...once again, it is the students!
As another poster so eloquently put it, don't let the screen door hit your big head on your way out!

  15. In the Statesville Record and Landfill today there is an article about providing day care to the young mothers who become pregnant while in school. I am outraged! If that worthless school board lets this pass, we should throw every last one of them out of office. It is time to revolt.
This act would send the already troubled youth an invitation to reproduce. This madness has got to stop.
